Free lecture to celebrate "The Weeks Act"

HARRISBURG, IL (KFVS) - In honor of the Weeks Act, Shawnee National Forest will host a free lecture.

The Weeks Act was signed by President William Taft on March 1, 1911. The legislation was proposed by Congressman John Weeks of Massachusetts. It set aside more than 20 million acres of eastern national forest land which in turn launched major conservation efforts.

On October 18th, Mary McCorvie, a Forest Archeologist, will lead a free lecture called "Suitable Only for Treecrops - A History of the Shawnee National Forest" at Morris Library's Guyon Auditorium in Carbondale. It will run from 7:00-8:00 p.m. McCorvie will present the same lecture on October 20th at the Shawnee National Forest Headquarters office in Harrisburg.

Ameren Ill. announces steady prices for the 2011-2012 heating season

Ameren Ill. announces steady prices for the 2011-2012 heating season

(KFVS) - Ameren Illinois has announced their customers can expect continued moderate natural gas prices during the upcoming 2011-2012 heating season.

Ameren Illinois says during the 2010-2011 heating season, their customers paid an average of 61 cents per therm. They anticipate this heating season price to average 62 cents per therm.

“We anticipate customer natural gas prices for this winter will be similar to prices paid last winter,” said Ameren Illinois Vice President of Gas and Electric Technical Services Scott A. Glaeser. “This moderate trend is the result of increased North American natural gas supply due to the rapid development of shale gas throughout the U.S., continued sluggish domestic and global economies and soft worldwide demand for all forms of energy.”

Ameren Illinois says it does not profit from the cost of natural gas paid by customers.
