New 'no trespassing' law in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has signed a law allowing Illinois landowners and renters a new option to signify a "no trespassing" notice.

The new law allows landowners and renters to use purple paint markings on trees or posts on the property to protect it from trespassing.

While the new law went into effect on August 22nd, additional notice is still required through the year 2012. Landowners who choose to use the purple paint marks still need to issue a "no trespassing" notice either verbally or by a written note until January 1, 2013.

If you choose to use purple paint marks, you may use a vertical line of at least 8 inches in length. The bottom of the mark has to be between 3 and 5 feet high. It should be no more than 100 feet from another mark and easily visible to anyone that gets close to the property.
