Comptroller offers one-day workshop for Southern Ill. leaders

ILLINOIS (KFVS) - Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka announced she will hold a Local Government Education and Training Session for local leaders and accounting professionals on Thursday, September 1.

Staff from the office will conduct a one-day training session from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dunn Richmond Economic Development Center, located at 150 East Pleasant Hill Road in Carbondale.

Topinka says the workshops will begin with a power point presentation to help leaders in electronically filing statutorily-mandated reports with the Comptroller's Office.

“These workshops are designed to get everyone on the same page when it comes to financial filings,” said Topinka.

ISP launches Operation Fatal 4 for Labor Day weekend

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Police are reminding drivers to make safety their number one priority over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

ISP says law enforcement will be pushing for zero fatalities by enforcing the four most common traffic violations leading to fatalities: speeding, DUI, failure to wear seat belts and distracted driving.

ISP will continue to partner with IDOT in its push against impaired drivers.

Southeast Missouri State library conducts survey of original Civil War materials

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University's Kent Library will be conducting a survey of original Civil War materials.

Included in the survey will be materials held by libraries, museums, historic societies, genealogical societies, archives, individuals, State historic sites or other organizations and institutions.

According to Kent Library, the materials will include things like original letters, journals, diaries, photographs, scrapbooks artifacts and other things from that period.

3 men charged in Jonesboro home burglaries

3 men charged in Jonesboro home burglaries

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced Tuesday that three men have each been charged with two counts of home burglary.

Christopher L. Doublin, 21, from 150 Hillside Terrace in Anna, Christopher A. Raines, 20, of 426 East Jefferson Street No. 19 in Anna and Jonathan White, 21, of 209 East Heacock Street in Jonesboro have each been charged.

Doublin, Raines and White are alleged to have burglarized homes on North Illinois Street and North Main Street in Jonesboro during July and August of 2011.

According to Edmonds, the three men were arrested after an investigation by the Jonesboro Police Department and are each held at the Jackson County Jail in Murphysboro on $50,000 bond.

Preliminary hearings are scheduled for September 13 at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Sikeston man sentenced in Union Co. for meth

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A Sikeston, Mo. man was sentenced to four years of prison in Union County, Ill. for meth on Tuesday.

Jimmy R. Farmer, Jr., 33, of 1329 McDouglas Drive in Sikeston was sentenced to four year for possession of methamphetamine.

Farmer was arrested on April 28, 2011 in Anna by Union County deputies after buying pseudoephedrine pills at an Anna retailer.

He was found to be in possession of meth and admitted to sheriff's deputies that the pill were purchased to the purpose of producing meth, according to Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds.

New 'no trespassing' law in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has signed a law allowing Illinois landowners and renters a new option to signify a "no trespassing" notice.

The new law allows landowners and renters to use purple paint markings on trees or posts on the property to protect it from trespassing.

While the new law went into effect on August 22nd, additional notice is still required through the year 2012. Landowners who choose to use the purple paint marks still need to issue a "no trespassing" notice either verbally or by a written note until January 1, 2013.

If you choose to use purple paint marks, you may use a vertical line of at least 8 inches in length. The bottom of the mark has to be between 3 and 5 feet high. It should be no more than 100 feet from another mark and easily visible to anyone that gets close to the property.
