"Walk Across Illinois Challenge" encourages residents to get healthier

(KFVS) - The "Walk Across Illinois Challenge" was announced today and encourages Illinoisans to walk 167 miles during 2012 to improve their own health.

Former Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls players, schoolteachers and students joined Governor Quinn to launch the program, which is designed to help Illinois residents get healthier by adding a half-mile of walking to their daily routines, which is roughly the distance across Illinois from Rock Island on the Mississippi River to Chicago on Lake Michigan.

Residents can accept the "Walk Across Illinois Challenge" by visiting www.WalkAcrossIllinois.org, where they can register and log their miles.

Illinois' schools get new report cards

ANNA, IL (KFVS) - Parents in Illinois are going to get a new look at how their schools are doing, thanks to a new law signed into effect by Governor Pat Quinn.

The new law is part of an ongoing effort and commitment to reform education in Illinois.

Part of that reform comes in a new school report card for parents to see just how their kids school compares to similar schools across the state.

"It's a great thing that's out there that gives you a snapshot of what's going on in the schools compared to this one," said Superintendent James Woolward at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, District NO. 81. "But when you compare the two, the old one is eight to nine pages. The new one is only two pages. When you compare the two, I think going home to the parents they'll find the new one much more user friendly. And a lot easier to understand."

Illinois Supreme Court to allow cameras in courtrooms

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS)-

For years Illinois has been just one of 14 states that don't allow cameras during criminal trials. But that will soon change. The Illinois Supreme Court announced a new experimental policy allowing cameras in trial court.

Illinois News Broadcasters Association President Jennifer Fuller says for years they have advocated for the use of cameras and tape recorders during criminal trials.

"I was shocked when I saw it but so excited," Fuller said.

Fuller is taking about the order from the Illinois Supreme Court that now allows cameras likes ours, inside criminal trials. Which Fuller says will help journalists better share what's gone on inside the courtroom.
