Friday is National Wear Red Day for the AHA

(KFVS) - The American Heart Association is reminding everyone to wear red on Friday, Feb. 3 for National Wear Red Day.

The AHA says this is the day hundreds of thousands of men and women remember the women who lost their lives to heart disease and pledge to fight this number one killer of women.

Southern Ill. boat, fishing show in Marion

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois Boat and Fishing Show will be at The Pavilion in Marion on Feb. 3-5.

The show will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5.

Admission is free and The Pavilion is located at 1602 Sioux Drive.

IDVA to honor their Jan. 2012 "Veteran of the Month"

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs will honor Terry Vance, a Springfield resident and U.S. Army veteran, as its January 2012 “Veteran of the Month” during a ceremony starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31.

  The ceremony will be at VFW Post 755, 2211 Old Jacksonville Road in Springfield.

“Terry Vance is an exceptional veteran who continues to put the needs of others above his own,” said IDVA Director Erica Borggren. “He served our country in Vietnam and, as a leader with many veterans’ organizations, has been a strong, lifelong advocate for his fellow veterans.”

Civil War Weekend scheduled at Anna Arts Center

ANNA, IL (KFVS) - The Shawnee Hills Art Council and P.A.S.T. are sponsoring a Civil War Weekend at the Anna Arts Center.

The arts center is located at 117 West Davie Street and organizers say the purpose of the weekend is to remember that era and its effect on “justice and liberty for all.”

Events planned on February 10, 11 and 12, Friday through Sunday, will feature Abraham Lincoln stories and his dedication to justice and liberty. Another focus of the weekend will be the involvement of Southern Illinois folks of that time, especially those who served and died in the service of their country.

"Walk Across Illinois Challenge" encourages residents to get healthier

(KFVS) - The "Walk Across Illinois Challenge" was announced today and encourages Illinoisans to walk 167 miles during 2012 to improve their own health.

Former Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls players, schoolteachers and students joined Governor Quinn to launch the program, which is designed to help Illinois residents get healthier by adding a half-mile of walking to their daily routines, which is roughly the distance across Illinois from Rock Island on the Mississippi River to Chicago on Lake Michigan.

Residents can accept the "Walk Across Illinois Challenge" by visiting www.WalkAcrossIllinois.org, where they can register and log their miles.

UNION COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Blood drives for the month of January have been scheduled for the Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky areas.

The American Red Cross says January and February are tough months for blood collection. They say blood drives may be canceled because of inclement weather, donors cancel blood donation appointments when the roads are bad and many people have cold and flu symptoms, making them ineligible to give blood.

Blood drives in Union County include:

  • Jan. 18 - Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, 608 S. Main St., Anna, Ill. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Communities to benefit from awards

Communities to benefit from awards

WASHINGTON, DC (KFVS) - Two communities will benefit from awards given to them through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Rural Development.

According to U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello, the Village of Cobden has been awarded a $15,000 grant to build a new storm siren system.

Shawnee Health Services will get a loan worth $598,500 to build an addition to a clinic in Murphysboro.

Costello said, "these projects will enhance regional safety, wellness, and economic development."
