Wednesday is "National Walk@Lunch Day"

(KFVS) - The 5th Annual National Walk@Lunch Day will be Wednesday, April 25.

National Walk@Lunch Day is created to improve personal health and decrease the costs of health care for employers and employees.

The goal is to make Nationa Walk@Lunch Day the start of a new daily walking routine for participants.

Participants are encouraged to bring or wear comfortable shoes and take a walk at lunch, rain or shine.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates the cost to treat illness and chronic disease caused by inactive lifestyles in nearly $1,000 for every family in America, every year.

They say simply getting 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk at least five times a week, has significant health benefits, lowering the risk of developing or dying from cardiovascular disease, hypertension or type 2 diabetes, and improving the health of muscles, bones and joints.

IDPH encourages discussion, testing during National STD Awareness Month

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Public Health is encouraging residents to discuss sexual health and get tested during National STD Awareness Month in April.

According to the IDPH, nationwide, there are an estimated 19 million new STD infections annually with nearly half of all cases occurring in young people aged 15 to 24. They say Illinois ranks in the top 10 in the nation for the number of reported cases for the two most common STDs: gonorrhea and chlamydia.

“Most STDs are treatable and many are curable. Early detection through testing is key, and increased screening, especially among high-risk populations, is critical to detect and treat infections, some of which are asymptomatic,” said IDPH Acting Director Dr. Arthur Kohrman. “We are fortunate in Illinois to be able to provide access to comprehensive information about STDs, as well as clinics to get tested.”

IDPH recognizes World Tuberculosis Day

IDPH recognizes World Tuberculosis Day

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Public Health is recognizing March 24 as World Tuberculosis Day by embracing the local theme, “TB: Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity” and adopting the global slogan “Stop TB in My Lifetime.”

World Tuberculosis Day is a reminder that although the illness is not common in the United States, it is still circulating around the world. IDPH says Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for the highest number of tuberculosis cases.

“Although Illinois experienced a record low number of new tuberculosis cases during 2011, the increase is cases worldwide can mean more cases here. And many of the new cases are drug-resistant tuberculosis cases, which are harder to overcome” said Dr. Arthur F. Kohrman, acting director for the Illinois Department of Public Health. “I urge all citizens to increase their awareness of tuberculosis and to join the global effort to stop the spread of this disease.”
