Tips to prevent damage to your car in winter

(KFVS) - When it's cold outside, cars can take some damage. There is something you can do to prevent your car from working too hard.

Bryant Parks, owner of Parks Automotive in Cape Girardeau, says to start your car and let it warm up for a few minutes before you take off. If the engine is cold, he says cars have to work harder and could be damaged down the road.

Parks says one thing you can do is make sure your fluid levels are filled, including antifreeze levels. If you don't have any antifreeze or the right mixture of antifreeze, your engine could freeze up and cause it to overheat and do some serious damage.

Also, he says to make sure you have plenty of gas. If you are stuck on the side of the road, you need fuel to keep your car running and supply heat. It is also good to have a kit or blankets in your car in case you are stuck out in the weather if your vehicle breaks down.

Parks says it is best to have a routine maintenance check on your car by a professional as well to make sure your car is running in its best condition.
