State workers protest canceled raises in Anna

ANNA, IL (KFVS) - State workers planned to picket at more than 75 government buildings across Illinois on Tuesday to protest Gov. Pat Quinn's attempt to cancel their raises.

Workers protested at the Illinois Veterans' Home, located at 792 North Main Street in Anna on Tuesday afternoon..

Gov. Quinn said recently he is canceling raises for nearly 30,000 employees, even though they're required by contract. He said lawmakers didn't give him enough money to increase pay and still keep state agencies running.

The illegal pay freeze is the subject of a federal lawsuit and an arbitration proceeding initiated by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, whose members have already negotiated their contract with Gov. Quinn to help balance the state budget.

The AFSCME accuses Quinn of breaking his word. They say workers had a deal with him last year to delay the raises but not to cancel them.
