DEERFIELD, IL (KFVS) - Illinois students filing for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) have already qualified for nearly $1.1 billion in federal Pell Grants for the 2013-14 school year, according to the Illinois Student

Teen crashes car into family's mobile home

Police say the 18-year-old driver left the roadway and ended up crashing into the front bedroom of the Sloan family's home.

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS)- A teenage driver is recovering after he loses control of his car on Lick Creek Road on Monday afternoon.

Police say the 18-year-old driver left the roadway and ended up crashing into the front bedroom of the Sloan family's home.

"I was standing out here on the porch working on getting the rust off this strap when I heard squealing tires," said Paul Sloan. "I looked up the road and seen him coming. I thought he was going to hit the porch. And I was going to try to get on the roof as quickly as possible."

But, there was no time for Sloan to do anything but hang onto whatever he could as the car smashed into his house.

"That car moved this house. My door is sitting two feet further back then where it was," Sloan said.

The impact of the car crashing into the front wall of the trailer knocked furniture over in the living room. And the frame of the home off of it's cinder blocks.

(Source: KFVS multimedia journalist Arnold Wyrick)

JONESBORO, IL (KFVS)- Wednesday afternoon turned out to be a very special one for a soldier returning from the battlefields in Afghanistan, and the students at Jonesboro Elementary School.

They all came out to welcome home U.S. Army Specialist Jerod Schaefer.

As the sirens blared from the caravan escorting Schaefer through town and onto the school, the kids waved their flags and cheered his arrival.

And within seconds of stepping out of the car he was driving the hugs began, the first one from his grandmother.

Then it was a long awaited hug from his cousin Allison Toler.

"I just really missed him so much, it's unbelievable," said Allison. "And we're going to go riding four wheelers and everything else. And we're going to play in the dirt and go down the big hill and have some fun."

The ride is going to have to be on another day though because Specialist Schaefer had a few more kids to say hello too.
