ANNA, IL (KFVS) - The Pet of the Week at Pets Are Worth Saving, Inc. in Anna, Ill. is Gerta!

PAWS says Gerta is a gorgeous female German Shepherd mix puppy who was eight weeks old when PAWS got her on April 18. They say her mom is a purebred German Shepherd, and her Dad is a handsome stranger. She and three of her sisters were brought to PAWS. She is a beautiful, loving, sweet puppy, and she will be a wonderful addition to your family.

You can meet Gerta and the other adoptable pets at PAWS Place Adoption Center, 139 East Vienna Street in Anna, Ill. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. You can also click here to check out their website or call 618-833-3647.

ANNA, IL (KFVS) - The Pet of the Week at Pets Are Worth Saving, Inc. in Anna, Ill. is Saffron!

PAWS says Saffron is a beautiful little Terrier mix. They say she has the wiry Benji type hair, and that just makes her even more adorable.

She came to PAWS in October 2012, when she was only 12 weeks old. The group says she and her sister were owner surrendered because their people could no longer take care of them. Little Saffron has a great disposition, gets along well with other dogs and likes people.

ANNA, IL (KFVS) - The Pet of the Week at Pets Are Worth Saving, Inc. in Anna, Ill. is Roscoe!

PAWS says Roscoe is a very, very handsome gentleman who was a little over eight years old when he was brought to PAWS on Dec. 14. He was owner surrendered because his family said they could no longer care for him.

PAWS says even though there are other dogs around him all the time and lots of activity, he is lonely and wants so badly to be some body's best friend and companion. He has a great disposition and he's house trained.

Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for lowest percentage of pet-owning homes

(KFVS) - The American Veterinary Medical Association recently released its U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, which revealed that Illinois ranks fifth for pet-owning households with 51.8 percent.

The survey is conducted by the AVMA every five years and always includes a breakdown of pet ownership by state. The most recent survey, conducted in 2012 but based on Dec. 31, 2011 numbers, reveals that the top 10 pet-owning states are:

  • Vermont - 70.8 percent
  • New Mexico - 67.6 percent
  • South Dakota - 65.6 percent
  • Oregon - 63.6 percent
  • Maine - 62.9 percent
  • Washington - 62.7 percent
  • Arkansas - 62.4 percent
  • West Virginia - 62.1 percent
  • Idaho - 62 percent
  • Wyoming - 61.8 percent

ANNA, IL (KFVS) - The Pet of the Week at Pets Are Worth Saving, Inc. in Anna, Ill. is Beasley!

PAWS says Beasley is a very nice, male Peekapoo (Pekingese/Poodle). They say he was owner surrendered to them because his family was having a new baby, and they were afraid he would be jealous of the baby. They say he was just a year old when he came to them in April 2012.

ANNA, IL (KFVS) - The Pet of the Week at Pets Are Worth Saving, Inc. in Anna, Ill. is Snickers!

The no-kill shelter says all the ladies' hearts flutter when Snickers walks by. They say when he came to PAWS on Nov. 27, 2012, he was one and a half year's old. He was owner surrendered because his owners could no longer care for him, so now he is looking for a home and family of his very own.

According to PAWS, Snickers is a lovely little purebred dachshund; he gets along well with other dogs, and he has a great disposition.

(KFVS) - A viewer sent us this picture of their Doberman puppy Chiko dressed as "Santa Paws."
