McCracken County announces fall sports coaches

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Coaches for the fall 2013 season of extracurricular and co-curricular activities at McCracken County High School were announced recently.

McCracken County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Nancy Waldrop, McCracken County High School principal Michael Ceglinski and McCracken County High School activities director Kris Garrett were on-hand to announce the following coaches for extracurricular and co-curricular activities: men’s and women’s cross country, dance, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, swimming and volleyball.

Men’s Cross Country

  • Kris Durfee is a social studies teacher in McCracken County Public Schools. During his 12 years of coaching cross country, Coach Durfee has coached seven state qualifying teams and has coached the Heath men’s cross country team to their current ranking of third in the state.

State police warn of the dangers of cyber bullying

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Illinois State Police are trying to warn school aged children about cyber bullying.

Dist. 22 State Trooper Bridget Rice conducted a presentation on cyber bullying at Lick Creek School in Union County, Illinois.

According to ISP, the presentation provided information to the students about how to protect themselves online. 

It also covered facebook cyber bullying and safe cell phone usage.

Trooper Rice talked to around 240 students.

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Board of Education announced it has awarded more than $39.2 million under the School Maintenance Grant Program to help 691 districts and vocational centers make necessary repairs and improvements on existing facilities.

IDOT launches 2012 rain barrel design competition

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Transportation launched its 2012 Rain Barrel Design Competition on Monday, September 24 to educate students on storm water management and to highlight the positive impact of green initiatives.

The competition, now in its third year, offers eligible students the chance to win a rain barrel based on creative artwork submitted through participating schools across the state.

"The popularity of the rain barrel design competition has soared, and with its continuation, has engaged students statewide to better understand how vital sustainability practices are for the environment, our communities and residents' overall quality of life," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. "We are proud to offer the design competition again this year, and encourage all interested students to participate and display their artistic abilities."

SIUC to honor 294 retirees Aug. 29

SIUC to honor 294 retirees Aug. 29

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale will honor 294 retirees at a retirement ceremony and reception on Wednesday, August 29.

According to SIUC, the ceremony will be in the Student Center Ballroom B. It starts at 6 p.m., with a reception following in the John W. Corker Lounge.

Chancellor Rita Cheng and her husband, Tom Cheng, will host the evenings' festivities which honors employees who retired between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012.

SIUC says the employees leaving during this time have 7,026 years of combined experience with the university. Of those retirees 225 have 20 or more years with the university, 59 have 30 or more years and two employees each have 43 years.
