Students at Shawnee High School learn about safe driving

WOLF LAKE, IL (KFVS) - Students at Shawnee High School learned firsthand how dangerous it can be to drive under the influence.

Wednesday morning, the prom committee participated in a mock crash depicting injuries and fatalies.

The grim reaper also took students from classes to represent area traffic deaths from the last few years.

"Wait to text because that's a major thing and just drive safe," said one student. "Stick with the speed limit and stick with just the major laws out there."

"It didn't seem real at all because you don't ever picture yourself ever being on a stretcher and when you do it doesn't even feel like it should be," said another student.

Coordinators say they hope students and other drivers learn the important of driving safe.

Anna-Jonesboro students learn about safe driving

Anna-Jonesboro students learn about safe driving

ANNA, IL (KFVS) - Students at Anna-Jonesboro High School are learning how important safe driving can be.

This week is Teen Safe Driving Week at AJ.

The week kicked off Saturday during the boys basketball game.

Crosses in the halls and on school grounds signify teens in southern Illinois who have lost their lives in care wrecks in the last five years.

Students will hear from speakers whose lives were impacted by distracted driving.

"It's a community wide effort that we all need to be good role models of safe driving and it's not just for the students here,"  said Krystal Emrick, Anna-Jonesboro teacher. "That they actually are looking to us at a young age and seeing what we're doing and that's kind of what they're going to follow."

A state grant helped make the event possible.
