Lincoln Museum offers free school field trips for Feb.

(KFVS) - The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum is offering free school field trips during the month of February for Abraham Lincoln's 203rd birthday.

At the museum, students can see ghosts come to life on stage, watch TV coverage of the 1860 presidential election, roam through the Lincoln White House, experience booming cannons in a Civil War battle and come face to face with original Lincoln artifacts.

Regular admission to the museum is $12 for adults and $6 for children ages five to 15.

All field trips to the museum are booked through the Springfield Convention and Visitor's Bureau. You can click here to book a trip.

Students can still apply for annual scholarship program

(KFVS) - Students can still apply for the annual Charter Student Scholarship program.

The scholarships will be awarded to outstanding high school students who will graduate at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.

Applications are available at local high schools as well as online by clicking here. They are due March 30, 2012 and Charter will award up to 10 $1,000 scholarships at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.

Gov. Quinn announces $21.7 Million award to create “Safe Routes to School”

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - (KFVS) - Gov. Pat Quinn announced Tuesday $21.7 million in Illinois Safe Routes to School grants to schools and communities across the state.

The federally-funded program is designed to enable and encourage children to walk and bike to school safely.

Gov. Quinn signs new law that makes changes to report cards

(KFVS) - Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Tuesday that will give parents and communities more information about their schools' performances.

The new law makes changes to school report cards, and report cards for school districts, in an effort to continue improving the state's primary and secondary education system. This law was the result of work by the Governor's P-20 Council, which was formed in 2008 to work with teachers, administrators and other stakeholders to improve education in Illinois.

“Every child in Illinois deserves access to a good, well-rounded education and we want every parent to know how their child’s school is performing,” said Governor Quinn. “Empowering parents and communities with this information increases accountability in our schools and allows us to better judge what works and what can be done better.”

Ill. among six states to set new K-12 science standards

(KFVS) - Illinois is among six new states to join a collaborative effort to develop new science standards defining what students need to learn from kindergarten through high school graduation.

The other five states include: Arkansas, Delaware, Montana, North Carolina and Oregon. They will be joining the Next Generation Science Standards project which now includes 26 states and the National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Achieve, a non-profit education reform organization.
