(KFVS) - The Heartland Football Friday game scheduled for August 17 is available.

The games include:

  • Calloway County vs. Caldwell County
  • Scott Hills, Tenn. vs. Fulton City
  • Reidland vs. Fulton County at
  • Lake County, Tenn. vs. Murray
  • Mayfield vs. Warren Centeral

Shawnee Forest to host ArborWild

Shawnee Forest to host ArborWild

(KFVS) - Shawnee National Forest will host an outdoor education program this summer called ArborWild.

The program began as part of the U.S. Forest Service’s Centennial Celebrations in 2005 and has been very popular. This year, it will be held at two locations in southern Illinois: Tuesday, June 12 at Evergreen Park, in Carbondale and Wednesday, June 13 at Memorial Park in Harrisburg.

The forest say the day will include a bird obstacle course, fishing, wildland firefighters and their engine, crafts, Native American rock art, Nature Jeopardy, Carbondale Science Center (Evergreen Park site only), bat biologists and a visit from Smokey Bear.

The event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., however the activities are on-going and the public is welcome at any time. All ages are invited to attend, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Girl Scouts is looking for leaders

Girl Scouts is looking for leaders

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Girl Scouts organization is looking for volunteer leaders in Union County and the surrounding Southern Illinois area.

The call is going out especially for leaders to help with girls entering kindergarten for 2012-2013, but Girl Scouts also is in need of leaders for grades K-12.

The Girl Scouts emphasizes that scheduling for meeting times is completely flexible and up to the individual volunteer.

They also emphasize there is a complete support network available from other volunteers, professional staff and other sources.

It is recommended new volunteers complete the application and training during the summer months in order to be ready to to start their new troops in the Fall.

Membership fees for adults is $12 and membership for girls K-12 is also $12. Financial assistance is available for both adults and girls. Registration is open year round.

High school students took home trophies from Froggland Bass Fishing Classic

CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Froggyland Bass Fishing Classic for high school teams was held on Kentucky Lake on Saturday, May 12.

Sixteen boats from eight schools in Illinois, Tennessee and Kentucky battled cool and windy conditions to hook the big ones. 

Sponsored by the Calloway County High School Bass Fishing Club and radio station Froggy 103.7, the first place trophy, as well as the traveling team trophy, went to the host school’s Bracken Robertson (left in photo) and Dillon Starks with a total weight of 15 lbs. 5 oz.

The split school team of Holhauser from Anna-Jonesboro, Ill. and Strack from Lyon County, Ky. came in a close second and the team of Cooksey and Finley also from Calloway County HS followed in third place.
Robertson also netted the Big Bass award with a 5 lb., 2 oz. beauty.

A team from  Marshall County HS came in fourth and a Reidland HS boat finished out the top five for the day.

27th annual fishing expedition scheduled for Wed.

27th annual fishing expedition scheduled for Wed.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The 27th Annual Fishing Expedition for Special Populations will be Wednesday, May 9 at Bleye Lake.

The participants will come from Southern Illinois schools and sheltered workshops in Jackson, Williamson, Union and other surrounding counties. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.

The Bank of Carbondale says over 1,300 Special Population youngsters and adults, volunteers and staff will line the shores of Bleyer Lake for this event. They will spend the day fishing and will be provided a picnic lunch. They say all of the fishing equipment is provided free of charge to the participants.

Bleyer Lake is located 1.5 miles south of Midland Inn, just off Country Club Road.
