Southern Ill. Roller Girls accepted into WFTDA

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Women's Flat Track Derby Association announced Tuesday that the Southern Illinois Roller Girls have been accepted as a member.

The WFTDA is the national governing body for women's amateur flat track roller derby in the U.S.

As a member, the SIRA joins the ranks of over 75 all-female, skater owned and operated leagues nationwide that have united to lead the growing sport of women's flat track roller derby.

The SIRA have been skating together since June 2009 and have donated well over $10,000 to charity since their inception. The girls will be hitting the track again for an intraleague fundraising scrimmage on Feb. 11 at The Pavilion in Marion. You can click here for ticket details.

Third annual Wounded Warrior Duck Hunt scheduled

JONESBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Grassy Lake Hunting Club and Southern Illinois University Carbondale will be sponsoring the 2012 Wounded Warrior Duck Hunt Jan. 13 and 14.

Organizers say the main purpose of the hunt is to get wounded warriors spirits and help their healing. The wounded warriors arrive in Southern Illinois and are greeted by local Veterans of Foreign War members. they have lunch in Vienna, Ill. and then go to Grassy Lake to prepare for the hunt.

The wounded warriors will also be honored by the faculty, students, and Saluki Nation of SIUC during half-time of the men's basketball game on Friday, Jan. 13, along with 10 World War II veterans.

IDNR reminds snowmobile operators to practice safety this winter

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding snowmobile operators and riders to be extra cautious this year when the snow starts to fall.

According to the IDNR, every year throughout the state, people are seriously injured or lose their lives on snowmobiles. They say many of these accidents could have been prevented had proper precautions been taken and common sense used.

They say in many instances, being alert, knowing the trail and traveling at a responsible rate of speed for trail conditions can prevent most accidents. In North America, more than 50 percent of snowmobile fatalities involve intoxicated operators.

The IDNR says last season in Illinois, 47 reported snowmobile accidents resulted in one fatality.

IDNR reports preliminary harvest of 97,760 deer, firearm season closed

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced Wednesday firearm deer hunters in the state took a preliminary total of 97,760 deer during the seven-day firearm season.

Last year's preliminary firearm season harvest was 98,944.

According to the IDNR, the preliminary second-season, Dec. 1-4, harvest total was 31,259, compared with the 30,907 during the same time in 2010. This year’s preliminary first-season, Nov. 18-20, deer harvest was 66,501, compared with a first-season harvest of 68,037 in 2010.  The preliminary harvest totals include deer taken in all counties in which firearm deer hunting is permitted, as well as at Chain O’Lakes State Park in Lake County.
