UNION COUNTY (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that road work will be suspended where possible over Memorial Day weekend to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

IDOT also provides advance notice of lane closures that will be in place for the  holiday weekend to aid drivers' travel plans and boost safety.

“Memorial Day weekend historically marks the unofficial start of summer, with thousands of motorists expected to hit the road, joining family and friends in commemorative festivities,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. “To reduce potential roadway congestion, improve safety and traffic flow, IDOT is suspending all non-emergency roadwork where possible and also providing a list of lane closures in advance to help motorists plan their trips.”

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police, Gold Wing Road Riders Association and A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education teamed up to kick off the "Start Seeing Motorcycles" campaign across the state.

With motorcycle riding season officially under way, they are urging all drivers to share the road. Governor Pat Quinn also demonstrated his strong support for motorcycle safety and issued a proclamation declaring May as Motorcycle Awareness Month in Illinois.

"As the weather improves and riding increases in popularity, more motorcyclists are hitting the roads," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. "With that in mind, passenger cars and trucks need to be attentive and make sure they 'share the road.' A motorcycle is one of the smallest vehicles on our roads therefore every drivers needs to proactively look for them before changing lanes or merging with traffic."

(KFVS) - The Illinois State Police District 13 Interim Commander, Lieutenant Thomas Stehley announced Tuesday that troopers will be watching construction zones closely while improvements are being made to area roads.

ISP says each year, hundreds of work zones present hazards, inconveniences and delays to drivers. According to ISP, state-wide in 2009, provisional data shows 31 people were killed in work zone crashes, 25 of those deaths were driver or passenger, five were construction workers and one pedestrian.

According to ISP, on Feb. 2, random details were implemented at I-57, mile post 65 near West Frankfort. They say troopers wrote nine citations and 10 warnings for cellphone use in a construction zone along with, 11 citations and three warnings for speeding through a construction zone.
